Thread: Escape the Songs
Feb 13, 2001, 11:48 PM
I took an old 2D platform codebase from Jazz Jackrabbit 2 (1998) and hacked it into a one-button runner. It is called Escape the Songs.

Auto run, single jump timing, rough sprites, loud synth beeps.

If anyone clears it clean, post your best run timing.

This is straight timing pain. Ugly blocks, good pacing.

The music is crunchy in a good way. Intro is catchy, then it gets mean fast.

Feb 14, 2001, 12:13 AM
Confirmed playable in IE5 here. Hitboxes are evil but fair.

Feb 14, 2001, 12:28 AM
Those yellow bounce pads almost threw me into spikes every time.

Feb 14, 2001, 12:41 AM
I got 82% then clipped a spike tip. Loudest scream of my week.

Feb 14, 2001, 01:02 AM
Not joking, this might be the best bad-looking thing on this forum.

Feb 14, 2001, 01:17 AM
Difficulty feels right. The last quarter is brutal.

Feb 14, 2001, 01:39 AM
Patch notes: ver 1.1 added level 2, and then ver 1.2 added level 3. Also tightened one early spike hitbox and rebalanced a late pad jump.

Feb 14, 2001, 08:26 AM
Cleared before breakfast. 1 attempt? no. 34 attempts? yes.

Feb 14, 2001, 08:41 AM
Level 2 finally clicked for me after I stopped panic jumping.

Feb 14, 2001, 09:02 AM
That cube-to-ship switch in level 2 is mean in the best way.

Feb 14, 2001, 09:19 AM
Version 1.2 is harder but feels way better paced than 1.0.

Feb 14, 2001, 09:44 AM
I can confirm level 3 exists now. I crashed at 91% and yelled.

Feb 14, 2001, 10:01 AM
Best run 87%. Last red section is savage.

Feb 14, 2001, 10:16 AM
The wave mode in level 3 feels janky but somehow fair.

Feb 14, 2001, 10:34 AM
The new level select screen is simple, but it works great.

Feb 14, 2001, 10:51 AM
Played level 2 at lunch. Ship part nearly cooked me.

Feb 14, 2001, 11:06 AM
Music sync still slaps. Good update.

Feb 14, 2001, 11:28 AM
Can we get a practice mode? My thumbs are gone.

Feb 14, 2001, 11:44 AM
Level 3 wave tunnel reminds me of old impossible flash maps.

Feb 14, 2001, 12:03 PM
I beat level 1, fail level 2, repeat forever.

Feb 14, 2001, 12:19 PM
Runs smooth on my old tower somehow.

Feb 14, 2001, 12:46 PM
The red palette on level 3 is sick.

Feb 14, 2001, 01:09 PM
Level 2 ship gravity feels perfect now.

Feb 14, 2001, 01:25 PM
Love that level 3 is long instead of just harder.

Feb 14, 2001, 01:48 PM
My best is 94% on level 3. Pain.

Feb 14, 2001, 02:11 PM
Can confirm all three levels load fine in browser now.

Feb 14, 2001, 02:36 PM
I got my first clear. 53 attempts. Worth it.

Feb 14, 2001, 02:52 PM
v1.2 definitely cleaner than the early upload.

Feb 14, 2001, 03:17 PM
Challenge accepted. Going for full clear tonight.

Feb 14, 2001, 03:44 PM
The notes screen saying controls are one-button is helpful.

Feb 14, 2001, 04:06 PM
I still fear those ceiling spikes.

Feb 14, 2001, 04:22 PM
Thread should be pinned. This game rules.

Feb 14, 2001, 04:57 PM
Reached level 3 and instantly crashed. Good evening.

Feb 14, 2001, 05:13 PM
If anyone finds impossible spots in level 3, post the percent and I will patch it.

Feb 14, 2001, 09:03 PM
Can confirm: level 3 clear is possible, just super strict.

Feb 15, 2001, 12:18 AM
Playing this with speakers loud at night is terrifying.

Feb 15, 2001, 08:07 AM
Morning run update: beat level 2 twice, level 3 still no.

Feb 15, 2001, 10:43 AM
Thanks for testing. Current live build stays at ver 1.2 with all 3 levels.

Feb 15, 2001, 01:05 PM
This thread is the only reason I check the forum daily now.

Feb 16, 2001, 09:29 AM
41 comments later and this game still wins thread of the month.
